A sticky situation for Ben Wilson, The Chewing Gum Man

A sticky situation for Ben Wilson, The Chewing Gum Man

Art from discarded chewing gum..?

The Millennium Bridge across the Thames closes this Saturday (14 October 2023) for essential maintenance.

But when it reopens in a few weeks it’ll be missing more than just a few rattles and creaks.

Ben Wilson has been creating art out of discarded chewing gum for nearly twenty years, ten of them on Millennium Bridge. His tiny 50p sized paintings are mostly dedications and requests from passers by as well as fans from around the world who not only ket in touch through Instagram but also make the pilgrimage to the bridge in the hope of seeing Ben working.

This weekend it’s all under threat and so I spent a day this week (mostly on my knees) capturing Ben’s story. Along with half the world’s media it would seem!

The shoot will result in a micro-doc later this year. So stay tuned – subscribe the blog to get regular updates.

But also look Ben up on Instagram: @benwilsonchewinggumman
