To Absent Friends – Perth

To Absent Friends in Perth took place on Friday 15 November 2019.

It was an opportunity to be open about grief and loss in a variety of ways – quietly reading, a conversation over a cup of tea, even drawing or using crafts to reflect upon what made your loved one who they were.

I was invited along to capture the event which I did and you can see the film here. However I was really taken by what a positive experience it was… before I arrived I couldn’t quite imagine how it was going to work.

But it did.

It worked very well.

So well in fact that it’s now won funding for two years of financial support through the Truacanta project, as organiser Emma Oram explains:

“The Truacanta Project is being run by the Scottish Partnership for Palliative Care, and funded by Macmillan Cancer Support.

[Truacanta] will support local communities across Scotland who would like to be part of a community action to improve people’s experiences of death, dying, loss and care.

Truacanta Perthshire was created by a joint application from NHS Tayside, the Health and Social Care Partnership, PKAVS and Dalweem, a care home in Aberfeldy.

We will draw together the skills of people working in the public, voluntary and third sector organisations to work across our communities, connecting with the young to older, focusing on aspects such as loneliness and isolation which often follows the death of a loved one.

We will have support for two years for this project, and we are already looking at ways to engage and offer practical kindness.

We’re also looking at offering learning and development, so that people will be able to explore different ways of having conversations to offer comfort for people who have experienced loss and are grieving.”

Watch the film and hear more from Emma as she talks about how people responded on the evening.

And if you’re interested in contributing or learning more about the project message me or leave a comment and I’ll connect you with Emma at Perth & Kinross Council.
